First deal

What must be true before the second card

The dealer slides a packet. Before you look at card two, you should already know the table type, the drop rule and that a declare without a pure sequence is invalid.

The outcome, said first

A legal declaration shows thirteen cards grouped into valid sets and runs, including one pure sequence. Everything else is commentary. If that sentence is not yet automatic, stay here. Do not skip to discard trees.

Deal

Thirteen cards arrive. The next card on the closed deck and the first open card start the exchange. Do not rearrange for comfort until you have marked a possible pure sequence. Comfort grouping is how illegal declares are born.

Group: pure sequence first

A pure sequence is a consecutive suited run without a wild card. Find it or find the shortest path to it. Impure sequences and sets can wait. An elegant three-of-a-kind does not rescue a declare that lacks the pure run.

If two near-runs compete, keep the one that needs fewer cards from the open pile. The other run becomes discard pressure, not a second religion.

Group: sets and impure runs

A set is three or four of a rank. A run is consecutive and suited. A printed joker or a wild from the open card can usually complete an impure run or a set. It cannot usually sit inside the pure sequence. If a listing says otherwise, believe the listing, not a remembered club.

Declare

Declare only when every card is in a valid group and the pure sequence is present. Then stop touching the hand. Rearranging after a declare is how players talk themselves into an invalid finish.

Invalid declaration

An invalid declare is usually more expensive than a timely drop. That is the whole teaching. If you are unsure, drop on the cheaper window. Pride is not a grouping rule.

The first-hand sequence as one list

The only numbered path on this note is the one you use at the table.

  1. 1

    Read the header

Table type, drop window, joker rule.

  2. 2

    Receive thirteen

Do not decorate the hand yet.

  3. 3

    Mark a pure sequence

Or the shortest path to one.

  4. 4

    Place sets and impure runs

Wilds stay out of the pure run.

  5. 5

Declare or take the cheap drop

    Unsure means drop.

Common illegal sets

Two kings are a pair, not a set. 5-6-8 of a suit is not a run. A wild used to skip two ranks is not a run. A second joker stuffed into an already-pure sequence is usually waste, not insurance.

What this note refuses to teach

Expected value, chip dumping, collusion or a guaranteed finish. Those either invent numbers or teach harm. The next note, if you want one, is strategy limits.

First-hand questions

What must be true before the second card?

You know the table type, the drop rule and that a pure sequence is required before any declare.

Can a joker sit in a pure sequence?

Usually no. A pure sequence is a suited run without a wild. Confirm the header.

What is an illegal set?

Three or four of a kind with mixed ranks, or a run that skips a rank. Two cards are not a set.

Is a first drop always cheaper?

Often, on Points and some Pool headers. It is still house text.

Does this replace the format ledger?

No. Clocks live on formats. This note is one legal hand.

When should I open strategy?

After you can declare without guessing. Strategy is discard pressure, not grouping school.

What changes after one clean declare

You can now choose a clock on the format ledger, or open the listing if the header already matches the evening you have.

Why the second card is a trap

The second card is tempting because it looks like information. It is also the moment people forget the header. If you have not yet marked a possible pure sequence, the second card is noise. Let it sit on the open pile until the first thirteen have a plan.

A first-timer who rearranges for beauty before marking the pure run will later declare an illegal hand that looked tidy. Tidiness is not a rule.

Teaching a new player without taking their cards

Point at the header. Ask them to touch the four cards they think make a pure sequence. If they cannot, they are not ready to declare. Do not reach into their hand. Reaching teaches dependence and also looks like collusion to anyone watching.

Drop windows as the only mercy

A first-drop window exists because the format knows some hands are dead. Using it is not cowardice. Missing it to 'see one more' is how invalid declares are born. If the window is closed, you are in the expensive part of the hand. Play accordingly or accept the bill.

What a valid declare looks like in the hand, not in a poster

Every card belongs to a group. One group is a pure sequence. No leftover singleton pretending to be a plan. Then the hand is put down and left alone. Players who keep sliding cards after the declare are bargaining with a rule that does not bargain.

When to leave this note

When you can say the five-step sequence without looking. After that, clocks live on the format ledger and pressure lives on the strategy tree. Staying here to reread grouping will not fix a bad clock.

Marking the pure run with a finger, not a speech

Touch the four cards that might become the pure sequence. If your finger cannot find them, your mouth should not declare. The finger is faster and less proud.

Pride rearranges a dead hand until it looks like art. Art is not a rule. The header does not grade composition.

Open pile manners

Do not slap the open card as if speed were skill. Look. Decide. Take or leave. Speed only helps people who already knew what they needed.

Taking a card you do not need 'to block someone' is a strategy note, not a first-hand note. Here the job is still a legal group.

Pairs that pretend to be sets

Two queens are a pair. They want a third. They will sit in your hand whispering. If the third does not arrive before the cheap drop window closes, the pair is a bill.

Beginners keep pairs because pairs look like progress. Progress is a pure sequence. Everything else is optional furniture.

The moment after an invalid declare

Stop talking. Read the posted cost. Do not immediately buy the next hand to 'get it back'. That second hand is a new sit and needs a new box.

If you do not understand why the declare failed, stay on this note. Do not skip to strategy to soothe the sting. Strategy will not unwrite an illegal finish.

Helping without touching

Ask them to show the pure run. If they show a run with a wild inside, ask them to find another. Then stop. Extra advice becomes a lecture and then a fight.

If they are not 18, the lesson ends. There is no junior table on this desk.

Why this note refuses odds

A first legal hand does not need a percentage. It needs a sequence of acts. Percentages here would be decoration and probably invented.

When you can declare without guessing, leave. The tree of discards lives next door.

A kitchen rehearsal

Deal thirteen. Mark a pure run. Group the rest. Decide declare or drop. Do it twice without money. If the decision is still slow, do it a third time. Money does not make a slow decision wiser.

Rehearsal is not childish. It is how people stop paying tuition to the same invalid finish.

Dead hands and cheap exits

A dead hand is not a moral failure. It is a cheap exit if the window is still open. People who treat every deal as a story they must finish will pay the expensive window. Finish the story on a kitchen table later, with no rupee attached. The first-hand note exists so the expensive window is a rare event, not a personality.

Counting groups, not hope

Before you declare, count groups with a finger. One must be pure. None may be a leftover singleton you are emotionally attached to. If the count fails, you are not unlucky. You are early. Early is the drop, not the declare. This sentence should be boring. Boring keeps money in the box.

Teaching teenagers nothing

If they are not 18, there is no lesson. Close the cards. The how-to is for adults. Kindness is not an age waiver. If an adult at the table wants a rehearsal, use a kitchen deck and no wallet. That rehearsal is the whole junior programme this desk will ever endorse.

Leaving the tutorial

When the five acts are automatic, leave. Staying to reread grouping will not fix a bad clock and will not replace a stop rule. The next useful rooms are formats and strategy, or a closed tab. All three are better than a fourth reread of pairs-versus-sets.

Invalid declare aftercare

Read the posted cost. Drink water. Do not buy the next hand for revenge. Revenge is a new sit and needs a new box. If you cannot name why the declare failed, stay and name it. Naming is the only aftercare that works.
